I'm back, I promise!

KT and I landed in Birmingham at ~4pm on Saturday but didn't leave until far after that and I'm sure you can guess why...no luggage.

Yesterday I was a slug, but I managed to read a big chunk out of the G.R.R. Martin book I've been working on for months. I'm not finished yet but it's on the horizon. I won't get too much relief as A Feast For Crows is right after that so I'm sure it will be another 800-900 pages. Don't get me wrong, I LOVELOVELOVE this series, but it is work!

Today, I've barely had a moment to collect my thoughts. How does so much crap accumulate at work while you're gone? The email alone was enough to make me want to head back home :(

All this to say, I'll have a complete rundown of my mini-week in Minneapolis (hardy har) but I'll have to wait til I'm at home. It will not be accomplished on a 15 minute break :)

afternoon ya'll!

current conditions....

....in Minneapolis right now, 34ºF with a windchill of 22ºF, cloudy with snow showers expected Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I haven't seen snow that completely covered the ground in 15 years so this should be a treat.

Tomorrow's weather in Chicago, where we will have a short layover before continuing on to Minneapolis, will be 32ºF with showers and it will be windy....greeeeaaaat. Just for the morbid among us...

easter sunday

What a fun day! I got up and exercised, 30 min Walk Away the Pounds video, 30 minutes on the recumbant bike and 30 minutes of strength training. I felt good afterward but I went over to KT's for easter lunch and I'm pretty sure I reacquired every last calorie I burned off this morning :)

I made a v.v. yummy salad with herbs, cilantro, green onions, crunchy sprouted peas, broccoli, cauliflower, some brightly colored little tomatoes called "rainbow tomatoes" and freshly grated carrots. It was colorful and delicious AND I got it all from Whole Foods Market so it was organic as well. I'm hoping that will offset the rest of the stuff that wasn't quite so low calorie...we'll see.

I decided to go visit with my mom for a few hours since it's only a 20 min drive from KT's house and we had a nice visit. She gets really anxious when I have to fly anywhere and I knew she would feel better seeing me before I leave for Minneapolis on Tuesday (did I mention that here?...library conference in Minneapolis in March....who's bright idea was that?). Anyway, we had a nice visit and it was only as I got ready to leave, a little after 7pm, that I could not find my keys. Of course, what else would it be? They were safely in my purse locked up in my car. So one call to a locksmith, $70, and an hour and a half later I was finally on my way home.

I had a few things I wanted to get done tonight so I won't have to wig out tomorrow night, but oh well. I'm tired and I'm going to bed so I'll just have to get everything done tomorrow. Oh yeah, in Minneapolis I'm getting another tattoo :)

night ya'll!

friday @ the movies

I've decided to start a brand new segment here at Holley's house called friday @ the movies. I've been getting back in to going since it is one of my v. fav things to do and hey, why not share the fun?!

So last Friday I saw what is destined to become one of my favorite movies when it comes out on DVD. I'll no doubt see it again in the theater given a smidgen of opportunity and that is Doomsday! (IMDB, Cinematical(not so complimentary but I'm all about fair reporting), Heretic Spire, a Damn Lie, author Cherie Priest's blog)

After the relatively crappy blandness that was 10,000 B.C., this was like a searing ray of visual fun and excitment! There were guns, explosions, humanity destroying viruses, destriers, flails, maces, mohawks, tattoos, piercings, cannabalistic parties, stage shows...I can't begin to describe it all! I laughed, especially at the Sol's entrance on the stage. All he needs is Tina Turner by his side and you'd have a much more modern Mad Max. This movie has been compared to many others but I've yet to see Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome mentioned and that makes me curious. I cringed, oh, several times, both from mild revulsion and an overdeveloped startle reflex. Flashy cars, A-Team assembled cars, long stretches of deserted highways...you get the jist. I had a great time with this movie from the opening scenes to the closing credits. I can hardly wait to see it again! Is it award-winning cinema? Probably not, but it IS entertaining and just the type of movie that shines on a larger-than-life, digitally projected, surround sound movie theater screen.

Some of my favorite comments from:

an IMDB commentor..."It is a movie that shows you can take the best elements from different sci-fi action movies and blender them up into a really fun frothy bloody good time. It's all a bit mindless and gory but it is a the most fun I've had in the theater in a long time and the action is gritty. Never resorting to Matrix style shenanigans. Enjoy it on the big screen while you can. "

Author Cherie Priest's blog (Heretic Spire, a Damn Lie)...(Hey, read her books too! They are pretty damn good!)...I. Loved. This. Movie. And it’s so deliberately, aggressively trashy that I suspect I’m going to be about 90% alone in this blind adoration, but there you go. I want to watch this movie again, and I want to watch more movies like it. (P.S. the rest of her post about this movie is definitely worth a read so click through on the links near the top of the post!)

-------------------------------------------------------------

On to this Friday!

I harbor a lasting appreciation and enjoyment of Tyler Perry's stage productions and movies so I could not miss seeing Meet the Browns yesterday! It was too funny, but was also patterned by moments of sadness, despair, and personal growth...alot like life is. There were the inevitable corny moments that occur in movies that play to stereotypes, but Leroy Brown was KILLING me and all the other moviegoers in that theater! I haven't laughed so hard in a long while. One of my favorites is when he asked everyone to quiet down for the reading of the Last Will and Testicles of his dearly departed father :) ...and the helichopters ...and the, well, I could go on and on. Go see it for yourself. And can I just say that Angela Bassett gets more beautiful everyday? She is going to be one of those fortunate people that stays pretty forever.

This Tyler Perry effort was v.v. good, but I enjoyed Diary of a Mad Black Woman the most of all the films I've seen. Madea's Family Reunion is my favorite of his plays. Anyway, if you like comedy, go see Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns before it's out of the theaters.

That is all.

library archaeology

It is an absolutely B-U-tiful day outside and I'll spend it under the wonderful florescent lighting at my library! When I got in to work this morning there was a book sitting on the reference desk in the middle of our desk calendar: The Quakers in America by Thomas D. Hamm. On the book is a yellow post-it on which is written, "For reference purposes only, I seek only open minds, not conversion."

hmmmmm.

I can't say that I've ever thought of the Quaker community as rabid evangelicals, but obviously someone has...

my crappy taste in movies....

....for ALL the world to see! Here is the fantabulous movie meme I lifted from the Book Diva!

The Rules!
1. Pick 10 of your favorite movies.
2. Go to IMDb (Internet Movie Database) and find a quote from each movie.
3. Post them here for everyone to guess (if you know them all, please don't guess every one).
4. Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed it and the movie.
5. No Googling or IMDb-ing. (That would be cheating, and no fun!)

....and here they are, in no particular order! Good luck!

  • Mellow greetings. What seems to be your boggle?
  • Fraulein, is it to be at every meal, or merely at dinnertime, that you intend on leading us all through this rare and wonderful new world of... indigestion? The Sound of Music guessed by the BookDiva
  • DON'T MOVE, DIRTBAG! Police Academy guessed by T
  • Oh, great valium. Not only will we be able to go to sleep, if we get attacked in the middle of the night, we won't even care.
  • Okay, just to be clear here, our options are: die here, die in the tunnels, or die in the streets. That pretty much it? Cloverfield, guessed by KT
  • Please! Nietzsche was a chauvinist pig who was in love with his sister.Day After Tomorrow guessed by T
  • I can't have a baby because I have a 12:30 lunch meeting
  • What do you think of this? Too ornate? Or do you think it's... beltacular.
  • I've always been better at feeling out volcanoes than people and politics. Dante's Peak guessed by Elizabeth
  • You used up all the glue on purpose!A Christmas Story, guessed by KT

I found these two notes sitting at one of our computer stations:

NOTE #1
To: Cameron
From: Molly
(small map drawn on the paper)
"Here's a map of where I am. Come find me if you need a hug or a kiss. Love, Friend."

NOTE #2
To: Cameron
From: Ex-Friend
It simply reads, "I'm moving now so you can't find me using my map. Asshole!"

Ah, the fickle hand of friendship....

Sips N Strokes b'day present

MK gave T and I a gift certificate for our March birthdays to this art thing called Sips n' Strokes. You BYOB, drink and paint. What's not to like? I call mine, The Wound! That's me in the green tent.

You can see our efforts a little better here, although there is quite a glare on mine.

sunday nature walk

I was petsitting Rudder and Topper this past weekend and I took Rudder on a two hour walk along Jemison Trail in Mountain Brook. It was an absolutely GlOrIoUs DaY!Topper was hanging out in his favorite kitty spot when Rudder and I left for the Trail.
Isn't he handsome?

If you squint, you can see the woodpecker on top of this tree. I thought that was a nest right below him, but it turned out to just be some moss. The sky was alot more blue in person.

Again, you have to squint on this one, but you can just see a cherry tree in full bloom through the trees...a welcome glimpse of spring!

Rudder looked like he was going to sample this and I am NOT up on local plant life. No poisonings on my watch, little buddy!

Here's a close up of the suspicious plant. Does anyone know what this is and if it is poisonous? Before anyone asks, Rudder did not ingest anything other than some good ol' St. Augustine on our woodland adventure.

I thought these were just lovely growing there amongst the rocks and, unfortunately, the bit of plastic in the plant next to them. There was not a plentiful amount of trash to be found on Jemison Trail, but there was enough to make me irritated. Come on people! How hard is it to find a freakin' trashcan?!

Isn't Rudder cute? He nosed around and splashed in the water and was generally v.v. cute....except when there were other dogs around and anything with wheels (ugh, bikes and strollers!)

I wish you could have heard the sound this little creek was making...it sounded just like the sunshine looks :)

This is probably an alternative hangout for woodpecker from the first photo!

library archaeology

As I was preparing for closing the other day, I found a piece of paper abandoned on a table that had previously been inhabited by a group of elementary students. Visions of Ralphie's theme from A Christmas Story danced in my head.

At the top of the paper, in big, messy, spidery script, the first line read, "what makes a good friend." Then some writing was scribbled out. Then there was a box with the word "title" out beside it and in the box was a single word, "friendship." Then the theme began, "Friends are a key thing to have in life. Without friends there would be no one"

Alas, the student either abandoned the assignment or chose to start it on another sheet of paper. This is all we are to recieve from the young philosopher on the nature and importance of friendship. I thought this child made a good start....or hey, maybe that's all they intended to write. It does have a certain finality to it.

quick catch-up....

....as opposed to quick ketchup (ick).

I have some great pics to put up (as soon as I can upload them from my camera)

I have some semi-great stories to tell (as soon as I'm not at work and have time to organize my thoughts)

I have a great movie meme to share with you (as soon as I can filch it off of the BookDiva's blog AND get time to do it)

I have a great movie to share with you (see all of the above)

night ya'll!

p.s. Congratulations on the new baby, Kenny!

You love life, and you can always find some reason to smile.

You are a bit hyper, and you're always looking for your next challenge.

You love getting things done - and you are usually on the go.

Your confidence and positive attitude makes you a very attractive person.

You can be a little flaky at times, but people are able to overlook that - because you're so fun!

random author/actor butcherings

Here are three of the best I've heard the past few weeks

Colon Firth - sounds more like one of the Garbage Pail Kids (whom I LoVed) to me :)

Pan Conry - Uh yeah, that's Pat Conroy, but who's counting?

Jodi Piccolo - the musical novelist cousin of Jodi Picoult

day of the crazy, psycho people.....

.....okay, just one. The rest of them were regulars so it would be cheating to count them. Libraries are usually rampant with generally weird clientelle. It's just the nature of the beast, but what are you supposed to do when the craziest one of all works with you?

We've had our share of crazies in my 8 year tenure there but wooooweeee! This is a live one! None of us girls will voluntarily stay in the room with this person unless the buddy system is firmly established....no loners. I have no idea how the other guys handle it. Crazy person (CP) seems to work hard and I haven't found any glaring mistakes other than this person's personality. I'm trying very hard to be inclusive and understanding of the differences of others but it's hard to do when you're so damned creeped out.

In other news, Jesus man was not in attendance as far as I know but Itchy Butt Man was with us for the better part of the day. He had what sounded like a doggy squeaky toy in his pocket and there were random squeakings throughout the day. That was annoying. Plus, he paid me for copies but licked his finger to count out dollar bills and HE GOT SPIT ON ME! I dove for the hand sanitizer as soon as he was out of site. EWWWWW!

And, bless his heart, OCD came in to see me. He's strongly insistent that I be the one to help him. If you don't know what unmedicated obssessive compulsive disorder looks like, count yourself lucky. His family treats him like dog sh!t and he constantly writes them letters because he said they won't let him talk when he's with them and, anyway, he's too nervous to fight back when they start to pick on him. Due to the nature of his condition, there are also plenty of complaint letters to businesses also. He doesn't really want me to correct what's there, he just wants to read it to someone aloud I think but if he gets distracted by people walking by he has to start paragraphs over and over and over again. I'd been in such a bitchy mood all day that it was almost more than I could handle when I saw him walk in, but it turned out to be just what I needed. Harness the petulant "self" for someone else's benefit....better than meditation or yoga.

I just really wish his family would be more patient with him and just leave him alone. They make fun of him for the things he doesn't know, isn't familiar with and basically don't understand and don't care to understand the nature of the disease. I guess I should preface this by saying, obviously I only hear one side of the story...his. It puts some sh!t in perspective for you, let me tell you.

I got no problems...nothing I can't deal with, work around, or fix.

Okay, ya'll've heard enough from me. (it's the South, double contractions are allowed)

;-)
good night!

various and sundry

Despite the wintry weather on Saturday, I made it out safely for my DWM! The mani/pedi session was just what I needed to kick the day off right! It was cold, the water was hot, and those massage chairs are FaNtAsTiC! If you've never had a pedicure before, I HIGHLY recommend it...even especially for you men out there. None of us like your manfeet. You look like a hobbit. Get that taken care of. Obviously you aren't required to get nail polish, just get those talons cleaned up. My toes, on the other hand (foot?), are beautifully polished in a periwinkle blue.

We were lucky enough to talk my Aunt C into accompanying us on our day out and we all three got manis/pedis together. We jetted out of there as soon as possible to head to lunch at the J@son's De!i salad bar as it is my current favorite. After yummy salads (and my mom's lettuce was indeed swimming) we scooted over to the R@ve movie theater for the SpEcTaClE of 10,000 B.C.

.

.

.

.

.

.

I was so disappointed! It is not very often that I agree with the critics but their descriptions of this mediocre film were right on the money, so don't waste yours by seeing it.

I'll tell you what I am excited about seeing and that's Doomsday! You know me and my post-apocalyptic leanings.... This looks v.v. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, which I lurve despite the fact that I was only 8 when it premiered. My brother was 16 so a lot of age inappropriate movies seared my retinas in those days, including all of the Faces of Death incarnations that he and his loutish friends so adored.

Anyway, before the 10,000 BM's movie we drove around Patton Creek because my mom and Aunt C had never been there before and wanted to look at all the shops.

Random questions heard from the backseat of my Mom's Honda Element:

What's over there at that Paneria place? (That's PanERA, Aunt C, no diarrhea imagery please!)

What's a chocalater? (Mom, that's "chocolatier"! They make all kinds of chocolate candies)

What's in a Dicks? (Well, the sign says Dick's Sporting Goods so I'll go out on a limb and say....sporting goods, Mom)

Those ladies just kept me HOPPIN' all afternoon!

Afterwards, I went back over to Mom's house to visit with Granny for a little while. When I got ready to drive off I realized I did not have my cellphone and went back in. I was CONVINCED that I had taken it in and we theorized that B (the nurse who gives Aunt C breaks with Granny) must have picked it up thinking it was hers. A common problem when 3 people in the same house have the same model cell phone. I picked up the house phone to call just as Mom handed me her cell phone from the pouch on her sweatshirt. I figured at the very least I could get B to meet me somewhere halfway and I could get my phone. Imagine my surprise when the pouch on my mother's sweatshirt started up with the Super Mario Bro.'s theme!

"It was YOU! You didn't notice that you had two cell phones in there?"

All I got was a very maternal, "Oh, shut up."

Sunday was great too as I had lunch with my Dad and Stepmom and my brother and his family. Everyone had the crud or were getting over it so the kids were pretty subdued but C did insist on sitting next to me and we colored and played several games of tictactoe. After lunch I headed out with D, K, and the kids while Dad and A left to go home. Dad just had knee replacement surgery about 2.5 weeks ago and was ready to call it a day. We saw College Roadtrip, which was SO much better than 10,000 BM. I could hardly believe that beautiful girl was Raven-Symone! I still remember her as an itty bitty kid from the Cosby Show! Also, I just love Martin Lawrence. I also saw him in Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins last week and loved that too. You can never go wrong with James Earl Jones...

Monday's adventures, to be continued.....................

snowing again

I'm watching it from the window of my exercise/computing room. Oh, it's just a dusting on the ground but apparently it's really messing up our highways because so many of them are elevated. I'll be leaving in a little while to meet mom for mani/pedi, lunch and a movie (10,000 B.C.). Mom is trying to make some positive changes as well so we will be descending on the salad bar at Jason's Deli for lunch. I can usually do better than mom since I don't care for commercially prepared potato/pasta/chicken salads and she loves them. My salads end up mostly veggies with a few little crunchy tasties on them and I don't like them drowned in dressing but mom prefers her lettuce swimming :)

I can see the sun coming out now so maybe it'll warm up just enough to melt some of this stuff because I want my DWM (day with mom)! Surface streets are fine, if a little wet, so I'm going to have to plot my course across several counties to my mom's neck of the woods.

On a health note, I have exercised at least 30 minutes everyday this week and I have eaten in a healthy manner 95% of the time during the last 7 days! I'm trying really hard to make it a habit so I won't have to work so hard at motivating myself as I going along on this course.

Okay, with that boring Holley's House update, I'm off to get ready for my cold, cold day!

speechifying

Today, at 11:40 I'll be giving a talk to a local women's group about library programming as well as booktalking a couple of must-reads and current favorites. The somewhat exciting part about it is that the group is meeting at the B1rm1ngham C0untry Club, which I would never be able to set foot in otherwise....think C@ddysh@ck, only much more serious and much more wealthy.

I'm sort of nervous and sort of not, a pretty awkward situation to find oneself in. I did attempt to wear something nicer than my usual everyday fare, but it still shows the signs of numerous washings which I'm sure I'll be hyperaware of and no one else will notice...just as a little bonus.

I'll be talking about the library's book group, an upcoming Jane Austen program KT is doing, my computer classes, the B1g Re@d, and the books I've chosen to booktalk are:

Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search For Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia by Elizabeth Gilbert (which I'm sure everyone here is really tired of hearing from me about!)

The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl by Timothy Egan (National Book Award winner)

The Uncommon Reader: A Novella by Alan Bennett

People of the Book: A Novel by Geraldine Brooks

questions, querries, posers....

for those of you wanting to know more about the mini-pigs

here's an abcnews article (not terribly helpful, but lots of adorable pics)

here's a UK article (they are supposed to grow no bigger than a cocker spaniel)

good googly moogly

wow, let me tell you that H0lley H0use Furn1ture in A1bany, Ge0rg1a has given me the best free source of G00gle traffic on the face of the earth...that and the "if all plegs are plogs" SAT/ACT question I lifted. They come up CONSTANTLY as the phrase that led people here. I doubt very seriously if any of them stayed as I did not have the answers to their questions, but I am amused all the same. On to the new stuff!

- "dirtiest house"
Now, I don't know whether to be amused or embarrassed by this but all I can say is I no longer have a dirty house :) I did at one time, but hours and hours of cleaning has eliminated the problem. The neat part, this person's ISP is out of Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK. What a great town name! Near me are the wondrous towns of Frog Level and Six Mile. As an aside, there used to be a sign at the turn to go to Six Mile that said "Six Miles To Six Mile." They finally put up a sign that just said "Six Mile" and included a helpful arrow. I thought it was a sure signal that our public works dept was moving up the evolutionary chain for sure!

--------------------------
The next few originate from several of the fine south/central american countries inhabiting our globe where, apparently, my name and the spelling I use are very common....VERY common.

- this one I'm not putting down because my younger readers might then look it up.
I thought it was pretty funny until I followed the link back and then it was still funny, but not appropriate for my friends' kids, some of whom read this blog.....and I'd like to keep my friends :)

- "bed sleep me and holley"
umm, no.

- "photos of holley naked"
not just no,
hell no.
Never have been, never will be unless my doctor sidelines in an unsavory occupation.

That's it for this installment of good googly moogly! For you other bloggers, what have been some of the best phrases that have led people to your blogs?

htw

awwwwwwwww!

Move over Chiquita! The mini-pig may be moving in!

I want one! Unfortunately, they are $150 each, only sold in pairs and there is a two year waiting list for adoptions....oh yeah, and you have to go to England to pick them up.

I say again

AWWWWWWWWW!

happy birthday to me!

I turned 31 years old today!

So far I have celebrated by exercising and eating a bowl of organic wheat cereal with soymilk (I'm not a vegetarian; I'm lactose intolerant) and an orange. Later, for even more fun, I'm going to work. Then I'll come home and read a book.

I'm sort of bummed that Mrs. Roomie hasn't even called to say HB yet (KT will tell me either here or in person later that she is not surprised). My brother is out of town so we made plans to meet up next weekend for a celebration and Tuesday KT is getting Mexican food and we are meeting up for lunch and a horror film, Fido. You can't knock that either!

Okay, I don't want any cheese with my whine, thanks. Moving on, you may or may not have noticed the utterly HORRIFYING weightloss widget on the side bar. Call me crazy, but it's there for the world to look at. I'm serious about it this time, people! I'm ready for a new me and this is the only way things like that get done. I figure all the shameful cringing will be good for all sorts of muscle groups....I don't think it ever really been studied.

KT and I have pledged to ourselves that on the next weigh-in day that we both lose, we will treat ourselves to the scrumptious-looking salad bar at Whole Foods Market! I wish I could afford to shop there but it's just too pricey for me. Maybe every other month or so I can put some extra $ away for a shopping trip there. Hey, maybe I'll get some BD money and make a special trip! They have the best looking produce I've seen outside of a farmer's market. Speakiing of which, I'm truly hoping that it will warm up SOMETIME SOON so the FM's we have around here will get geared up. I've looked at the co-op programs online that you pay into and they deliver fresh fruits and veggies everyweek but if I can't afford regular trips to WFM, I sure as hell can't afford that either. I would be very nice though. I'm pretty tired of canned and frozen....if anyone has any great ideas on this front, I'd be glad to hear them :)

In other news, I did my taxes Friday and it was horrible! For the past 4 or 5 years I've been going to the local IRS office and letting them do the whole shebang. I had to wait in line of course but I just took book and hung out half a day. Imagine my surprise and horror when I get up to the counter and the IRS has implemented an APPOINTMENT PROCESS! And hey, guess what? They are booked out til April 15th! So they have all these internet terminals set up so you can do your taxes online. I did it and hope to all things holy that it was correct because I have no idea what the hell I was doing. I was just filling in the blanks and clicking "save". I might sock away a big chunck of my return incase they ask for some back. I have this irrational fear of the IRS...I'm am simply terrified of them :( I wonder if there's a word for that???

Hold the line a moment please, I'll be right back....

Okay, not that I could find, but here's a list of other phobias if you are interested in the topic. Someone should definitely coin the phobia phrase concerning the irs.

Oooops! Just noticed the time! I've got to go get ready for work. There are pencils to be sharpened! (yes, that's what a Master's degree and about $13,000 will get you, pencil sharpening and shitty coffee)

Yay!
